KLASİK ve KÜLT FİLMLER

Korku filmlerinde çizdiği ürkütücü tipler sessiz sinemanın klasikleri arasında yer alan ABD’li aktör Lon Chaney (1883-1930; asıl adı Alonso Chaney), “bin yüzlü adam” olarak tanınmıştır.

Hem annesi, hem de babası sağır ve dilsiz olan Lon Chaney, daha çocukluğunda pantomimle tanışmıştı. Kardeşinin gezici gösteri topluluğunda aksesuarcı, yapımcı ve oyuncu olarak çalıştı. Sinemaya küçük rollerle başladı ve ilk kez Hell Morgan’s Girl’de (1917, Hell Morgan’ın Kızı) önemli bir yardımcı rol aldı. İki yıl sonra The Miracle Man’deki (1919, Mucize Adam) rolüyle parladı. Bunu izleyen on yılda sinemanın en iyi karakter oyuncusu olarak ün kazandı ve çoğunu Tod Browning’in yönettiği filmlerde unutulmaz tipler yarattı. Bunlar arasında The Penalty (1920, Ceza) filminde canlandırdığı yer altı dünyasının kötürüm patronu, The Hunchback of Notre Dame’da (1923, Notre Dame’ın Kamburu) kambur Quasimodo, The Phantom of the Opera’da (1925, Operadaki Hayalet) Paris Operası’nın bodrumlarında hayalet gibi dolanan, yüzü asit yanıklı müzikçi ve London After Midnight’ta (1927, Gece Yarısından Sonra Londra) bir polis müfettişiyle bir vampiri canlandırdığı ikili rol sayılabilir.

Tell It to the Marines (1927, Külahıma Anlat), While the City Sleeps (1928, Kent Uykudayken) ve Thunder (1929, Gök Gürültüsü) gibi filmlerdeki yalın oyunuyla da dikkati çeken Lon Chaney, çok çeşitli rolleri canlandırmadaki büyük yeteneğinin yanı sıra, makyaj sanatındaki ustalığıyla da tanınmıştı. Yaşamını konu alan Man of a Thousand Faces (1957, Bin Yüzlü Adam) filminde onu James Cagney canlandırdı.
